Write That Memoir Right Now

Rate this book
If you want to put your life story down in words, where do you start? Exactly what story are you hoping to tell? How are you going to fill hundreds of pages? How do you plan it out? Memoirist, blogger, and writing teacher Kim Brittingham shares her insight into getting started with your writing and crafting your memoir. Starting with the basic questions every writer should ask themselves, such as why do you want to write a memoir; what story do you want to tell; what form should your story take; who is the audience; and most importantly, why does anyone care? Kim shares her experience and her wisdom, reviewing key aspects of the writing process, including characterization, plotting, theme, focus, point of view, editing, and revising. And she adds extra information on the business of getting published and ways to get your story read.

Kim Brittingham is a writer and blogger whose personal essays have been published on iVillage, Salon and Fresh Yarn. She received widespread national attention, including appearances on the Today Show and NPR, when she created a mock self-help book jacket with the title, Fat is Contagious: How Sitting Next to a Fat Person Can Make YOU Fat, wrapped it around a real book, and pretended to read it while riding the buses of New York City as an informal social experiment. Brittingham is the star of a video series pilot for NBC Universal called “Big Life” and her own video series called “Kim Weighs In” (http://www.kimweighsin.com).

Brittingham is an Anglophile; dreams of finding an affordable fencing school; lustily watches the History Channel and can’t stop having good ideas. She divides her time between New York and the Jersey Shore.

I’ve read so many books on writing memoir and this one is so great!! Absolutely cannot day enough. I listened to this on audio and would really love a physical copy to buy, really hoping that is an option because it’s one I would refer to over and over again.

Encouragement to actually write that memoir you've got rattling around in your head. (And a very helpful, brief tutorial on the difference between an autobiography and a memior - and why we all probably could write SEVERAL memoirs over our lifetimes!)

This is a book I will refer back to again and again.

Lots of great tips. Almost wish I'd read this before I started my book. It's probably better suited for that. But this will certainly help me as I start making edits, which will likely involve moving around large chunks -- as well as cutting a bit. The exercises are pretty good, too. Especially the character exercises, which will help me add depth to the people I introduce, especially to help others get to know them as well as I did.
