AFTER: A Post-Apocalyptic Survivor Series

Rate this book
This is not our world. This is the world AFTER.

Featuring the entire eight-part novelette series

We challenged eight Eerie River authors to imagine life AFTER the world we know is destroyed by a cataclysmic event, leaving our species on the brink and struggling to survive. In each of these stories you will find a new world, years after the old one was ravaged by war, disease, invasion, climate change or mythological event.

In the caves and on the roads, through transformation and violence, and in the empty spaces left by the vanishing sea, discover the fate of the humanity that remains, both familiar and alien. Where survival is a struggle and the future lives in the ruins of the past.

This is not a collection of stories about how the world ends.

These are stories of how humanity survives.

Fans of "Love, Death + Robots" will love this collection!

AFTER is a brilliant collection of 8 post-apocalyptic novellas. Brilliant authors, with incredibly different and unique takes on a world after an apocalypse. A diverse collection of voices, characters, and writing styles, all have something wonderful and creepy to add to this collection.
Here are my reviews for each novella individually.

Derelict by T.M. Brown - 3.5 stars - It took me a little to get into this world but still a good read and investigation into a world where the oceans receded and humans have had to find a way to survive with limited resources and a desperation to live. Some nice turns of phrase.

A Place Beyond the Storm by David Green – 5 stars - A short read novella to get your heart pumping. What David Green manages to do in so few pages is amazing. The pace is fantastic, and by the end you are running with your fingers clasping for life and your breath coming fast. A brilliant dark post apocalyptic world built and shown through the eyes of a 14 year old girl who never knew what the world used to be.

Quantum Rule by Jay Sandlin – 5 Stars – My favourite start of the series. I was hooked from the get go. There were breadcrumbs that made you suspect what comes next but never enough for you to be sure. Epic addition to the AFTER series.

The Creeping Void by Tim Mendees – 5 Stars - A short read with everything you could ever want from a post apocalyptic short read. Characters that are brilliantly flawed and trying to find a way to survive, Mendees influences and supplication to the elder gods, and brilliantly timed humour that helps to balance the heart pumping horror and deliciously decrepit descriptions. I can’t give this anything less than a five. Brilliant work.

Heart of Thorns by Chris Hewitt – 4 Stars - Another great read from eerie rivers After Series. The characters are awesome and everything comes together at the end in heart pumping and terrifying ways. I got some brilliant Borg trek vibes in a few parts and love it. I would also love to see more of Faye, what a kick arse character.

Fading Echoes by Joel R Hunt – 4.5 Stars - A brilliant read. It was intense but mostly easy to follow throughout the entire journey. A small confusion at one point that got cleared up, and another confusion that remained but not vital. Definitely curious about what happens next in this post-apocalyptic world.

Carry On – 4 Stars – Delicious and dusty. I loved the characters and the realistic portrayal into human nature, and what we might be willing to do to survive. Absolutely loved and adored the main character, and the books look into names.

Sin Chaser by S.O Green – 5 Stars - What an amazing take on the seven deadly sins, faith, and a post apocalyptic world. As a naturalist I often find stories about ‘religion’ hard to take (despite writing them as well lol) but I could not get enough of this story. It was beautifully written with Green’s turn of phrase being spot on brilliance. They ramp up the tension perfectly and damn what an ending. I can’t wait to read more of their work.

This cover is awesome looking and really shows off the whole theme of this series. I received this book in exchange for an honest review. Thank you Eerie River.

TM Brown—Derelict—The main characters: Mikaela, Stefan, Forge Master Johanna, Freja, Anders, and Donovan. We hear of these Tidelands which is the home of “Colossus”. The crew begin a journey to the Tidelands in hopes of finding “Earth’s Blood” and they encounter so much more along the way.

David Green—A Place Beyond the Storm— I knew it was going to be a post apocalyptic event, but aside from that I really had no idea what to expect. In a lot of these stories, not every character gets to live to tell their story, so I just had to dive in to see what was about to happen. This story flowed along at a fairly quick but even pace. I will admit that I wished it was longer.

Jay Sandlin——Quantum Rule—What remains in the location where once stood a proud, beautiful New York City, is nothing like it once was. Rebecca, Bruce, and X show us the life above and below ground. Were the Q-Lords or morlox in control of what stands as a population? I loved reading about some of the things that “survived”—such that they were.

Tim Mendees—The Creeping Void—My favorite line from this story: “Yes, it’s not the best tea, I’m afraid,” Sam shrugged, before plonking another sugar cube in his mug. “The tea bags are about a hundred years past their ‘best before’ date. The sugar will help.”

Chris Hewitt—Heart of Thorns—I had a tough time getting into this one and I’m not even sure why … BUT once I got into it I very much enjoyed meeting Faye, Roo, Ava, Adan, and Prof. Little food, even less alcohol to drink, and cold weather plagued the few survivors. The ending had a nice tidbit that I didn't see coming.

Joel R. Hunt—Fading Echoes—Katie and Bec are the first two characters that we meet. They are traveling on the run to get away from Boss Clean and his army. Along the way they encounter other people that they need to determine if they are friend or foe. This story flowed nicely and I had a tough time putting it down.

Holly Cornetto—Carry On—This line made me laugh. “Python scoffed, almost knocking it out of Hemingway’s hand. “The gun’s only useful if you know how to use it. Take the fu****g baseball bat, and if that doesn’t take care of the problem, yell for help.” This was another one out of the eight that I had a hard time getting into.

S.O. Green—Sin Chaser— I think this line says a lot. “What is a Sin Chaser? I’ll tell you what. They’re the brave women and men, out on the frontline of a war we already lost, trying to keep us, the dregs of humanity, alive long enough that we might be able to rebuild.”

A wonderful compilation of post apocalyptic stories. A couple of them were harder for me to get into than others, but all in all, I really liked this book.

Book Review⭐️⭐️⭐️

After provides the reader with eight short post-apocalyptic stories, all written by different authors. Although some of them have a bit in common, these stories are not connected.

I am a huge post-apocalyptic book fan. However, I typically read series on this subject, so short stories were a change. Overall, I am not a short story lover as I tend to feel shorted at the end.

Each author provides a quick read for those that like to zip through a story. Each story abounds with its version of life after the devastation. Creatures attack, soul suckers are on the move, and survival is not guaranteed as the characters deal with various chilling scenarios.

I enjoyed some of these stories more than others, but you can make your own decisions. I tend to lean towards plots that have a realistic approach. Although fiction, I have specific ideas of what could happen after a disaster. People banding together and fighting for each other seems more likely than monsters, soul suckers, etc. Others might prefer their post-apocalyptic reading to have the excitement of these things. Each to their own, right?

Thank you to R&R Book Tours, the authors, and the publisher for providing an ebook for me to read and review.

AFTER may be my favorite Eerie River anthology to date. I know I probably say that about every anthology they publish, but this collection definitely ranks high on my list of favorites. The connecting thread of these stories isn’t the apocalypse, but rather the world after apocalyptic events strike. Each one is different and unique, and each after is certainly creepy and decidedly grim.

I don’t like to choose favorites from collected works, instead choosing ones that stood out or struck a chord with me. Two stories that really gave me chills and left me thinking about them long after finishing the book were A PLACE BEYOND THE STORM by David Green, and CARRY ON by Holley Cornetto — the former offers a glimmer of hope, though it’s quickly ripped away because haha! there is no hope in the After, while the latter just felt so real and entirely too plausible.

Bottom line — another winning collection from Eerie River, and certainly another one to add to my favorites shelf. Definitely check this one out if you’re a fan of post-apocalyptic tales and dark, gritty worlds.

I received a copy of “After A Post-Apocalyptic Survivor Series “ from Eerie River Publishing in exchange for a honest review.
Eight scary stories. I have to admit I’m a big fan of short horror stories, and this collection delivers thought provoking scenarios at how humanity could survive the end of the world. So as the book says, “Eight Worlds, Eight Endings.” Eight Authors.
Each tale of dystopia is unique and definitely surprising to this reader on how many ways our world could potentially be destroyed. A fallen Star, Acid Rain and more. Each tale begins with what is left of humanity and an underlying theme emerges, “There’s no solace in knowing one’s fate.”
If I could borrow a phrase from the great Stephen King, “I could elucidate the charms of each individual story (part of me longs to do just that), but that would be unfair to you….. I would be telling too much. “. You must discover each of the eight well written frightening stories on your own so in turn you can share the same experience of horror that I have enjoyed.

Each of these stories are not for the faint of heart. I've really appreciate this series and that each story is only a few chapters long and gives you such insight and detail into what opposed to apocalyptic era would be. Each author stand out from each other with the ability to weave stories that engage and terrified. I really appreciate the opportunity to read this collection stories. It almost makes me feel like ready to take on anything. The heroines and heroes give you strength but at the same time also make you feel their weakness. Above all each story sometimes tells you that there is not always light at the end of a tunnel. These are not stories about zombies but a story of survival each one.

This was an interesting collection of stories, although it felt strange reading them with the state of the world today. Each author’s unique style shone through, and some I wish had been a little longer or fleshed out, but overall they were well written. Although some stories are more realistic, and some are more fantastical, it’s not too hard to see the world turning into any of the ones described within these pages. This certainly isn’t a light read, and some stories will absolutely haunt you once you’re done reading them. If you’re looking for a collection that will worm it’s way into your brain and make you wonder what if, you’ve found it.

After effects of the apocalypse

Loved the variety of stories in this genre. Each story was well crafted and I am familiar with the authors who write short stories which are captivating. Each story was unique describing the plight of survivors of the apocalypse against monsters, otherworldly creatures, demonic entities. Barren terrain and a lack of resources make their struggle to survive a challenge. Overall a collection which is a must read for its originality.

This is an excellent set of short stories by different authors. The first in the series leaves you on a cliffhanger, but none of the others have that feeling. Many do feel like they could become their own series, but also feel complete in their own right. I bought this book because I was looking for new authors to read. This did not disappoint! I have bought a few of these authors other works already. The stories drew me in their own ways, only one or two did not keep me engaged. I highly recommend.
